The United States Small Business Administration estimates that in 2008, approximately 627,200 new businesses were launched. In that same year, there were 595,600 business closures and 43,546 business bankruptcies. Overall, new businesses have a 50/50 chance of surviving the first five years. While these statistics are discouraging, small businesses can dramatically improve their chances for success by avoiding some common beginner mistakes. Failing to Plan

One of the biggest mistakes small business owners make when starting out is failing to plan ahead. Developing a strategy for how you will run your business is key to maximizing your potential for success. A business plan acts as a roadmap for where you want your business to go over the long term and it identifies your vision for the company. No matter the size of your business, having a clearly defined destination makes it easier to stay on track to reaching your goals.
